"These stories are dedicated to memory of Benjamin Thomas W. and to anyone who has had to deal with the loss of a child." Part four Welcome
Ally Rapture "Yes, Peacekeeper. I can smell the blood on your hands." She spat at him. "Frelling animal!" He grabbed her by the arm and lifted her to her feet. "Listen, I am no longer a Peacekeeper. I want to prove it to you." "Why would you care Peacekeeper? Why do you have to prove anything to me?" She became suspicious, glancing toward the door, then back at him. "Look for yourself. You say that all Peacekeepers only think of two things, sex or domination." He stood there looking at her. Jack was right, her eyes were beautiful…The room grew dark. Enra approached him slowly, warily. Her eyes locked on his. She grabbed his shoulders and forced him to his knees. She watched as his story unfolded. She witnessed the first Leviathan and heard their songs. The songs of the soul that they produced were stirring. She witnessed its suicide and his guilt over letting the beautiful creature die. She witnessed the blue world that Jack came from and what he had done to save it. She witnessed the destruction of the huge Peacekeeper battle ship. She witnessed the contact with the Leviathan Lursa. It was all too much for her, she lost the Rapture. She found the emotions she witnessed almost overwhelmed her. She let him down on to the floor slowly then sat on the edge of her bed, waiting for his mind to clear. Ulric's head was spinning. He opened his eyes slowly, and quickly checked his neck and arms. "Don't worry Peaceke… Commander, I made no withdrawals." She slid to the floor beside him. "Why? Why have you done all of this?" "I stood by and watched for too long." He looked at her with a pained smile. " I couldn't ... I can't do that anymore. I had to act." "Thank you Commander Selton." She smiled. Ulric grinned as he saw a smile illuminate her beautiful face for the first time. "It's Ulric." He got up slowly, walked to the door and opened it. He removed the lock and tossed it back to her. " Would you like to take a tour of Lursa?" "Yes, Ulric. I would." A Welcome Ally Jack didn't turn around. He had been writing in his log and he was struggling to control the emotions he had dredged up. "Ulric don't talk to me. Talk to her. You have to prove to her that we mean her no harm." She moved closer to Jack. "He already has, Jack Crichton." She said with a smug look. Jack jumped out of his chair spun around to face the two of them. "I take it you showed her a little of your past." He smiled at her. "Enra, you are welcome to stay with us for as long as you want." "Thank you." Her smile faded slightly." I would like to travel with you for a while." "I was just going to give Enra a tour. Would you like to join us? "No you go ahead." He said, reaching for his logbook. "I have a lot of writing to do." Progenitors Key "I think she is still feeling the effects of the control drug. She has gone back to her room to rest. The tour seemed to drain her." He grabbed a tray of food cubes from the dispenser. "So how is your log coming?" "I had forgotten what it's like to write." Jack stretched his hand. "Pilot says we will be able to starburst in another two arns." He looked at Jack for a long time. "Jack, we need to talk." "You know Ulric, whenever you say that, you really do sound like my son. "He looked up from his book." You see, John and I never really got along that well and every time he had some thing important to tell me he would announce: 'Dad we have to talk.' He was never comfortable just coming out and telling me what he wanted to say. I need you to feel that you can just come out and say whatever it is on your mind. "Okay, Jack. I am going to link with Lursa before our next starburst." "What! Are you crazy? Do you have any idea what could happen?" "I can see why John would…" "That's enough Ulric! God damn it. You listen to me. I almost lost you once, thanks to that fucking link. I don't want you to do it again! " He stood and walked to the large view plates, then turned to face Ulric. "Why, why would you feel the need to take that chance?" "When you apologized to Lursa you communicated directly with her. I need to know how. How did she know what you said? "Why don't you just ask Pilot? She could relay the question." "Because, when she tried to communicate with me she used a word not an emotion. Jack I need your help. I don't want to do this alone. But if you …" "You're going to do this with or without me, aren't you?" "Yes I am." Jack looked at him then looked to the floor. "What do you need me to do." Jack thought of the nightmare of the AutoDoc again. "Take this." He held out his hand. "It's a heavy trank. At the first sign of trouble you knock me out." "When do you want to do this?" "Now." Jack exhaled deeply "Let's go!" The men headed to Pilot's Den. Jack knew this was trouble but held his tongue. "Commander Selton, Colonel Crichton, may I help you with something?" Jack spoke first. "Pilot, Ulric is going to communicate with Lursa again. Please warn her to be careful." "Do you think it is wise to try this so soon after the accident? "No - No I don't, but it's not up to me." Jack replied, looking pointedly at Ulric. "Okay ladies, when you are finished discussing my welfare I am ready to try." Ulric looked at pilot with a smug grin. Ulric closed his eyes and called Lursa. He felt her presence. She seemed to speak to him in words not emotions. I can't hear you. What are you trying to say? The words poured through his mind. He lost consciousness and started to fall. Jack grabbed Ulric as his legs gave out. He dropped the trank gun and lowered Ulric to the floor, where his body stiffened. Jack bent down next to him searching for the injector. It lay behind him, the chemical chamber smashed. "Pilot, tell Lursa to stop! Now! Pilot!" Jack looked up at Pilot. She too was unconscious. Jack heard the sound of hundreds of DRDs moving into the chamber. He noticed a wisp of smoke in the center of the walkway. It gained form. It was a holographic projection of a being. "Hello, Jack Crichton please don't be alarmed." The young
voice said. "Ulric and Pilot are fine. At this point I need to speak to you
alone." "Lursa? Is it…?" His voice trailed off. "How?" "First, I am very sorry for the injury I caused Commander Selton. I had no idea that I could cause such damage. Listen to me, Jack Crichton. What I am about to say must not be revealed to the others. It is too dangerous." The image moved closer. Jack recoiled at the clearer view of the image. It was of a young human girl. "Please Jack do not be afraid." She stepped back. "We have little time." The DRDs began to surround the image. They seemed to be staring at her. "You asked Pilot a question. I am here to answer that question." "Ulric told me what the … " He was afraid of putting the two words together. "Key was." "Yes, I know. His information, however, is not entirely correct. The Progenitor Key blocks all access to the memory, but each Biomechanoid does not carry the same information. Each of us is unique. When one is lost, thousands of cycles of information are lost forever. The information was placed in us to be distributed throughout the galaxy at the appropriate time. "I assume that the time is not yet right for the Key to be used." "Correct, but due to our enslavement, the Peacekeepers are close to unlocking our secrets. Ulric must not know any of this. Peacekeepers would be able to chemically remove the information from him. You are different. They do not have the knowledge of your species. They could not retrieve the information from you." "What do you want me to do?" Jack knew that he owed a great debt to this being. Once he was reunited with John, he would be willing to die to save them. "I … we need you to stop the Peacekeeper experiments at Drathor Prime. They will have the Key within two or three cycles." "How am I to do this without telling Ulric?" He looked at the lifeless form on the floor. "I won't be able to do this on my own." "You may tell him once you are underway to Drathor Prime." She looked at him with an eerie smile, then moved closer, as if she wished to touch him. "But first we will find your son." Her smile changed to the look of mischief. "Jack Crichton do you know why Ulric could not hear the songs of Leviathans when he was at your world?" "He mentioned that to me some time ago. I assumed it is because my world is on the other side of the galaxy." "No, Jack Crichton. It is because your species had not yet developed the Biomechanoid technology" The hair on the back of Jack's neck stood on end. "You mean that we …" "Yes Jack. You are one of the true Progenitors that the Pilots' race speak of." "Earth ... How long?" He could barely speak. "You have traveled forward through time more then eleven million years. The earth is gone. The cradle was no longer needed." "Are there any humans left?" "They have ... we have evolved Jack Crichton. Your race did not build the Biomechanoid as ships. They evolved their race into Biomechanoids. They ... we became a race of explorers sharing information through their ... our songs." Jack's mind was swimming with the revelation. His knees gave way and he sat heavily on the floor beside Ulric 's unconscious body. "The Biomechanoids are the descendants of your race." She smiled at him. "I took this image from deep in my genetic lineage as a way to communicate better with you Jack Crichton. I have removed the key from my memory." The smile melted from her face. " No matter what happens, I must not be captured again by the Peacekeepers. You must destroy me if that were to happen. "I will do what ever you need me to do Lursa. But why?" "You will need all the knowledge that I possess. It is my choice." She looked down. "My time is up. Thank you, Jack Crichton." "Wait Lursa. Can we talk again?" "Perhaps." She turned and walked away from him fading to nothingness before his eyes. Ulric started to stir. Jack leaned down. "I told you this was a bad idea Ulric. Are you okay?" "Frelling fine! Nothing, not even a feeling from her." Pilot was stunned "What is going on? Did I miss something? Colonel Crichton… Jack what happened?" "Nothing happened Pilot. You saw Ulric fall to the floor didn't you." Jack hated to lie but this was for her own good. Imagine what she would do if she found out that Lursa and I were related. Jack cracked a smile. "What are you so happy about Jack?" "Nothing I'm just glad you're okay" That evening Jack couldn't sleep. He sat on the corner of his bed listening to the biological sounds of Lursa's body. Jack's limited brain was still trying to digest all that Lursa had told him. Crais Returns "What are you so happy about Jack?" Ulric said with that questioning Peacekeeper glare. "Nothing, why do you ask?" His grin expanded into a smile. Enra looked at Jack. She knew what he was smiling about. The slightest color came to her face. She was blushing. "You impress me Jack. I thought you were never going to notice." She caught his infectious smile. "Well it's none of my business." He continued to smile. Ulric seemed to be very embarrassed by the acknowledgement of their affair. Jack understood from his studies that Peacekeepers were taught to keep the bloodline clean; not to have any type of personal contact with non-Sebaceans. Boy the Nazis would be proud of the Peacekeepers. "Does this mean I don't need to have blood drawn twice a week anymore? Ulric finally spoke. "No Jack! You will still keep to your appointments with the MedBay or I could set up the treatments with the AutoDoc." "No thank you! I still have nightmares of you in that machine."
Well John, it took us four weeks to finally get Enra to wear a Peacekeeper uniform. She finally changed her mind after being locked up for seven arns in a access shaft while we were boarded by a patrol. She has been a great help around here. She was a Biotronic Engineer on her world. She has done some modifications to Lursa's sensory receptors. Pilot is starting to treat her like God. She says that she can now monitor objects over a parsec away. We have been in the Uncharted Territories for five weeks. No signs of Moya... Pilot's image appeared in the clamshell viewer. "Jack!" Pilot was obviously upset. "Crais' Command Carrier is closing on our position." "Pilot, can we Starburst?" Jack knew the answer before he asked. They had just completed their longest Starburst and he knew tha Lursa needed to rest before attempting another. "I am sorry, but not for another six arns. She…" "Understood Pilot. we will have to deal with him ourselves." He called Ulric. "We're already heading for Command." Enra was already scanning the nearby systems when he arrived in Command. "Nothing, nowhere to hide!" Ulric looked at Jack. "It's time." Jack scanned the star systems. They were too far away." Okay Ulric, top bin in my quarters. You'll find everything you need. Enra it's time to become Lieutenant Commander Jilis Rhetin. She sighed. "Just what I've been looking forward to." She headed to her quarters. "Remember Jack. Get him here alone. We can't have witnesses." "I know." He looked up and realized that Ulric was as scared as he was. "It will work Ulric. It has to work. Get your ass in gear. We have a Fleet Captain to take care of." "Pilot, bring us around to an intercept trajectory. Send to Fleet Captain Crais that I wish to have a private audience with him." The Leviathan rotated to the direction of the command carrier and accelerated. Pilot called "They are powering Frag Cannons." This is Captain Delin of the Lursa. Fleet Captain Crais, stand down your weapons." He gritted his teeth as they entered the firing range of the command carrier. "Under Article 001 of the Deca you will stand down." Crais' image projected on the viewer. "I don't know who to
blame. You or your Pilot, Delin." "I chose to have Pilot lie to you. I needed more time. I couldn't have you bothering us." "You have impeded my search Delin. Why shouldn't I destroy you?" His evil smile widened. "The question you asked me at dinner?" Jack replied calmly, "I have the answer." "What! How?" His face softened and his image became more cordial. "That's not important. You want to see what I have uncovered? Yes or no." This is it Jack. He'll either buy it or … "Come alone. I don't want any of your henchmen over here. Do you understand me?" Crais smiled. "You are playing a dangerous game, Captain Delin. For your sake, you had better have found something big." "Bigger then you could ever imagine!" Jack smiled coldly at the projection and bowed slightly. You will never bother us again! "I'll be there in two hundred microts." He cut the private link. "He's on his way. Enra are you ready?" "Yes, I'm outside the hangar doors." "Ulric…" No response. "Ulric," he repeated, impatiently, "Are you ready?" "It's taken me longer than I thought. I'll be there … Frell! I just cut myself. Just for the record your pants are way too long on me." "Roll them up. He won't notice." I hope. "I'm heading down to the hangar." Jack exited Command. Next stop, Crais reception. He met Enra outside the huge doors to the hangar. "Wow that uniform looks great on you. Where's your blast helmet? We can't take chance of him recognizing you." "Thanks!" She said sarcastically. She picked up the helmet from the wall and put it on. She lowered the blast visor and her beautiful green eyes were hidden. "Relax Jack. This will work." She tried to smile but failed in the attempt. Pilot called "Crais' transport has arrived. Docking bay pressurizing." Crais walked through the doors. He looked at Jack then at the Peacekeeper at his side. "Who is this Delin?" "This is Lieutenant Commander Rhetin. She is not important." "Where's Ulric?" "He is monitoring your ship. He will meet us in Pilot's Den." He turned to Enra. "Stay here Commander. Make sure that Fleet Captain Crais came here alone." He shot Crais a look. She nodded and walked into the hangar. The two men walked toward the Pilot's Den. "So Delin, what have you discovered about the Progenitors Key?" "It will be much easier if I just show you. If you play your cards right Crais, you could own the Council." He smiled at Crais. "Of course, it will cost you. "I'll be the judge of that … " He didn't trust Delin. For that matter, he didn't trust anyone. "Welcome Fleet Captain Crais." Pilot's voice reflected his nervousness. "So my lying friend, it would appear that you have fully recovered" Pilot looked down. "I am sorry Fleet Captain Crais. It was not up to me. I was instructed to give you the misinformation." "Okay Delin, I'm here. Show me what you have found." Jack looked at Crais then back at Pilot. Ulric, it's show time. "Pilot tell me what the Progenitors Key is." Crais moved toward Jack. "What are you doing? Have you lost your mind?" Pilot seemed startled by the question. She looked down at her console then back at Jack. She, more than any of them, was surprised that she was not affected by the question. "The Progenitor Key blocks access to the genetic memory housed on all Biomechanoids. It has been … " "That's enough Pilot!" Jack was surprised that it worked. "You did it Delin!" He grabbed Delin by the shoulders. He was smiling. "How?" Jack clenched his teeth. He was ready to kill this mad man with his bare hands. "Ask Pilot!" "Pilot. His voice became sweet. How is this possible?" He said with a little giggle in his voice. Pilot body raised from behind the console. She pointed toward the doorway. "Look behind you." Insanity "What are you talking about Crais?" Jack turned slowly to the doorway. His skin crawled. As they had planned, Ulric had cut his beard and worn one of Jack's tee shirts and pants. He fought back the rush of emotions. Oh my God! He couldn't look at him anymore. It was too painful. "Are you okay Crais? There's nothing there." He looked a Crais with disapproval. Ulric spoke. "Crais you know I didn't kill Tauvo! You did!" He smiled and moved back into shadows of the corridor. Ulric found it difficult to do this to Crais but he had to be stopped. There was no other way. "No!" Crais screamed and ran toward the doorway. He looked back at Jack once. His were the eyes of a mad man. Crais ran into the passage. "Where are you Crichton? He laughed. "I will have you." He pulled a small pulse gun from his jacket. Killing him will change nothing. You killed Tauvo. His blood is on your hands. Crais looked down at his hands. They were covered in blood. "Crichton!" He screamed. He looked at his hands again; the blood was gone. You've gone mad! He started running down the corridor. "Where are you Crichton?" He laughed insanely once more.. Ulric made his way to the galley where he met Enra. "Stay by the wall. He has a gun!" She whispered to him. "Is it working?" "It didn't take much. You should have seen Jack's face. I thought he was going to have the breakdown." "Can you blame him?" She rubbed his hairless cheek. They could hear Crais panting as he ran down the corridor. He passed the galley without looking in. Ulric yelled to him. "Crais, Tauvo never wanted to be a fighter pilot! He wanted to be a tech. You forced him - bullied him, until he became what you wanted him to be. You killed your brother years ago! You! Not me!" Crais stormed into the galley, nearly hysterical, tears pouring down his face. "No. You lie, you frelling … " He raised his gun, his chest thrusting out with every breath. He raised his other hand to steady the pulse gun. "I have you Crichton." He started to laugh. Enra moved from the wall next to the doorway where Crais stood. In one kick she knocked the gun from his hand. Crais was startled as his wild eyes focused on Enra. "Enra? You're alive?" He looked back at Ulric. Enra approached. She stared at him. "Look at me Crais." "No!" He screamed but it was too late. His gaze locked onto her green eyes and he seemed to melt. Ulric turned toward the windows, unable to watch. Enra's Rapture descended on what was left of Crais' mind. Together they reviewed all the torment he had caused his younger brother. Ulric had given her specific events in Tauvo's life with which to overwhelm Crais. She used them with deadly accuracy. Jack entered the Galley and found Enra with her hands wrapped around Crais' head. He couldn't look at her. He was afraid of what he would see. He picked the weapon up from the floor and walked over to Ulric. He looked at him and shuddered again. In unspoken unison, each man gazed out toward the huge Command Carrier. Enra slowly lowered the hulk that had once been one of the most powerful men in Peacekeeper command to the floor of the Galley. She stepped over his twitching body and made her way over to Ulric. "It's done." She told them. "It didn't take much. He was already on the edge. Even before I raised those memories. Now all we need to do is wait and see what happens when he wakes up." Ulric grabbed her by the waist. "What if it doesn't work?" Enra looked back at the twitching body. "We're dead!" Jack said without turning around. His heavy breathing continued. He started to open his eyes. Upon seeing Ulric he broke into tears. An expression of terror washed over his face. Jack moved toward him. "Crais can you hear me." He didn't respond. Ulric moved toward Crais. "Crais do you know who I am?" Crais looked up into Ulric's eyes. His tormented mind had snapped. He was frothing at the mouth and mumbling "Tauvo I'm sorry ... Tauvo …" He shrank away into the darkest corner of the Galley. The three of them found nothing to celebrate in their victory over Fleet Captain Crais. A short time later, Ulric returned to the Galley where Enra was watching Crais. He had changed into his uniform. "Where's Jack?" "He is contacting the first officer of the Command Carrier." She picked up her helmet and put it on. "By the way, I like you better with the beard." She smiled and headed for the docking bay. Jack returned to the Galley. "They're on their way Ulric." He said without meeting Ulric's eyes. He couldn't look at this specter of his son. First officer Dalthena Mace brought a medical team with her to collect Crais. She had few questions for Captain Delin. This was an automatic promotion for her. She was a shrewd PeaceKeeper. "This has come as no surprise, Captain Delin. I have been monitoring his condition for some time. We will take care of him." She said dryly. "Thank you Captain Mace!" He smiled at her." The medical team rolled Crais into the waiting transport and Jack watched as Crais disappeared into the transport. He had the feeling that this was not the last he would see of Fleet Captain Crais. "Good luck on your research, Captain Delin. We might be able to help each other." She smiled at him. "Perhaps -- I will keep that in mind Captain Mace." He bowed slightly to her and she headed for the waiting transport. Jack left the transport hangar the doors closed behind him. Hope Fades Enra had to stand in his path in order to stop him. "Okay
Jack, what's going on?" She looked at him with those haunting
eyes. Ulric was next. "Jack we've been through too much together for you to start keeping secrets from me now." Jack looked down the merging passageway. "We destroyed a man's mind today Ulric. I found that I enjoyed it and it sickens me. I don't like who I am becoming." Enra knew these feelings all too well. "Jack, you did what was needed. You could not have talked your way out of this one." Ulric stood there and tried to understand what Jack was experiencing. "Jack this plan was my idea. I am to blame. Not you. Please." Silence descended upon the corridor and Jack couldn't look at them. "I need some time." Without a glance at either of them, he walked toward his quarters. This time they didn't bother trying to stop him. None of them slept well that night. Jack got up in the middle of his sleep cycle. He walked casually down to Pilot's Den and entered the huge cavern. "Hello, Jack. What are you doing up?" "Pilot I wanted to talk to you privately." "Yes." She became nervous. This was unlike him. Do you know why I am able to say" He took a deep breath. "Progenitors Key." Pilot recoiled. "Why do you do that? It is quite alarming. I do not know … I was going to ask you about that, once things settled down." "Pilot, the key has been removed. You now have access to the data stores on the Lursa." "How is this possible?" She stopped all motion as if lost in thought. "It is amazing! How did you do this Jack?" "I didn't. Lursa did!" She stopped again, obviously deep in conversation with Lursa. "I understand now Jack. I will do whatever you ask." "First, you can not tell the others of any of this. It is too dangerous. Second, I need you to go through the data stores and look for a weapon, some type of bomb. It must be large enough to destroy Lursa." "What! I will not allow…" "Pilot listen to me! We cannot let the Peacekeepers get their hands on Lursa! Ask her yourself. You must understand how important this is." She looked down at him with large sorrowful eyes. "I will do what you ask. It will take some time to find the information." "We have plenty of time my friend." Jack smiled at the huge Pilot. "Thank you for all your understanding."
"Pilot, you and she are like part of my family." Jack looked down at the floor. "Good night Pilot." Jack walked down to the Galley, his mind filled with thoughts -- humanity was just as savage as the Peacekeepers and yet there must have been something that allowed them to evolve beyond their savagery. Knowing that humanity's struggles wouldn't end in vain brought Jack to the realization that the struggle would never really end. That is what drives humanity and that same struggle is now being reaped on the Biomechanoids. He knew that this was to be his destiny. Jack met Ulric and Enra early the next morning. His demons from the day before had been exorcised by the conversation with Pilot. "I'm sorry. Enra. You did an excellent job yesterday." He looked down." Then forced himself to look at Ulric. "I owe you an apology as well. Your plan was flawless except for one thing. Seeing you being chased like that." He had to break his gaze from Ulric. "Seeing John being chased like that gave me a sense of hopelessness for him. He may not have the support that I have had from you. It is probably hard for you to understand. My son is out here alone." "Jack look at me." Ulric demanded. "We will find your son." Pilot's image projected on the viewer. "Excuse me! Lursa has detected the songs of a Leviathan within three light cycles." Ulric closed his eyes and listened. He could hear it too. Jack jumped up "Pilot is Lursa ready to starburst?" "Yes, Jack." "Pilot. project an intercept course with that Leviathan. Now!" The three of them headed for Command. This news seemed to lift Jack's spirits. "I told you before, Jack, there are more Biomechanoids out here than just Moya." "I'm sorry Uli. Was there somewhere else you wanted to go?" Jack smiled at his Sebacean friend. "By the way I hope you are planning on growing your beard back." Enra grabbed Ulric's cheek. "Thank you Jack, I have been saying the same thing." She smiled. "I assume I have no say in what I do with my facial hair." "You would be correct Commander Selton." Enra laughed and hugged him. Jack felt some contentment in the fact that Ulric seemed to have found peace in his life. Ulric moved to the center of the command tier, "Ok Pilot, are we ready?' "Yes Commander Selton." "Starburst now!" Lursa jumped from normal space. Next stop, the Leviathan Moya? Fin On to Coming Home |
